Art is in the eye of the beholder

Fun fact: through High School I was very into Art. I took every extra period I had to do another type of art class: fashion design, textiles, advertising designs, pottery, water colors. While there are key aspects of how to use different mediums, the reality is that art is more in the eye of the beholder.

You learn as an artist to not let other’s opinions totally manage your mood. Of course there are certain people you want to like your work, sometimes for an emotional reason, other times for a professional reason. But in general, you make art for yourself. You let your creativity take control and that is often impacted by the other feelings you have at the moment. You let the art do the talking.

Profound.

Smart. And a healthy way to process.

So why is it only “art” that can take this approach. Wouldn’t it be great if you could adapt this to all of your life practices. Putting all of your energy into something. Allowing your mind and creativity to dance together with whatever emotion you are having… and then do not over work it, do not let other’s judgements change you.

Sounds glorious.

My children and my perfect nieces (biased but I can be), made some art today. This cute little chalk pattern has a rhyme and reason to them and the pretend story they were making. It caught my eye that the 5 of them just made it. They did not tell each other what to do. They just made it near each other and it turned out great. It just works - for them.

So here is the challenge for the week, can we as adults channel our artistry mindset? Can we spend this week just letting the mind meet creativity? Can we be okay with whatever “art” happens? Maybe your best chapter will come from such open freedom.
