Set a vision and then let it evolve…
Have you ever sat down to a truly blank canvas? A piece of paper, an empty room, an untouched backyard or even just a full fridge. The possibilities are endless.
You make a choice. You need to determine if this is exciting and doable, or overwhelming. Sure some of my examples might not feel monumental but you know you walk in the kitchen and say “I just cannot tonight,” and grab your phone for DoorDash.
But it’s real. It is scary to have so much opportunity in front of you. We often need or desire some form of guardrails. I spent a few years envisioning what it would be like to truly own my career, as a business, with clients I wanted to help, with work that made impact and with my natural voice. I got scared - a lot! I backed down and rationalized stability over flexibility.
But then a moment hit, one where I will save for a later date but just know it was the moment I realized whatever I painted on my canvas would be perfect, because I painted it.
I stopped worrying and starting believing. I know I have skills others need. I know I can make organizations better. I know I am an asset. With that, I needed to start painting… and I am still painting. See the most important part is to have a vision. Then start to paint the vision you have… sure here comes breakdowns of missions, values, goals, milestones, etc.; but it starts with - a vision!
