Why are we always looking for bigger fish…

“I have bigger fish to fry,” is the expression. I conceptually get it, but today while staring at this big, oversized, blue fish playground… I found myself wondering why do we have to fry any fish?

Do we always need to be looking for the bigger fish? To fry? To catch? To brag about?

I don’t think bigger is better. In fact, I would argue that the energy to search out a bigger fish when you can do great work with what is within reach is equally, if not more, important.

The concept that we are always looking around the corner, always chasing bigger is all part of the “business person” motto to be chasing the dream. I am not questioning why you use the term, but I think the mentality needs some evolution.

Perhaps, you need to make your corner the best corner there is while keeping a small eye around the corner.

Pick two items you are doing today: one is a task and one is work towards a goal. Can be personal or professional. Now, think about if you chased for bigger. Would it be distracting? Would you get the work actually done? What other work is impacted if you are not just capable of accomplishing what is in front of you?

See finding bigger fish is an activity for vision setting, for goal stretching… but it is not the day-to-day. If you constantly chase you never actually accomplish.
